“Mind uploading is the hypothetical process of scanning the mental state of a particular brain substrate and copying it to a computational device. The computational device could then run a simulation model of the brain information processing, such that it responds in essentially the same way as the original brain and experiences having a conscious mind.”
– According to Wikipedia
Wiki then goes on to say that,
“Eminent computer scientists and neuroscientists have predicted that specially programmed computers will be capable of thought and even attain consciousness”
What has this got to do with dreaming?
Well what Wikipedia is saying is that to perform mind uploading one requires the appropriate data transfer and storage, software and hardware, otherwise it is just hypothetical.
But I say, to a limited degree we already have mind uploading, so let me explain…
According to Scientific American Magazine 2007,
“The human body contains more bacterial cells than human ones”
It goes on to say that,
“we are practically walking Petri dishes, rife with bacterial colonies from our skin to the deepest recesses of our guts”
and that many scientists including, Carolyn Bohach, a microbiologist at the University of Idaho, say that,
“there are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells”
Now I am not going to argue over the exact ratio of human to non-human cells, but even if it is more like 50:50, that still means that the human you see in front of you is more of a colony than an individual.
The Dreaming Mind
It seems to me that if the human body is already a colony, then the brain and consequently the mind is likely to be a colony too.
So when you have a dream, you may have noticed that there are different dream characters in that dream, and I have said before that they are usually considered aspects of you. See my Dream Players Post
But suppose we take the point a little further and realize that our minds contain perceived and uploaded information from our environment, our friends, and our families.
We encounter these characters in our dreams and they seem to act independently.
Well, perhaps they are behaving independently!
What if they way it all works is that we absorb information from our parents and others all the time. This information is uploaded into our minds. And there is operates independently in the environment of our brains.
That would be exactly “Mind Uploading”
And we see it happening all the time. For example,
- Our dream characters are indeed independent.
- Our parents (and others) do speak to us as voices in our heads
- We do support memes of all kinds that operate independently in our minds
- We are not single characters even in our waking lives because we often talk to ourselves as if we contained independent people.
These are all examples of aspects of minds that have been uploaded into our brains. Mind uploading is alive and well, as I said, in a limited form.
To Relate to Wikipedia (cited above)
Our brains are those computational devices that are capable of supporting the data transference from other people’s minds.
Our brains do support the simulations functions required for those aspects of other people’s minds to exist independently in our heads.
Our brains do have the necessary structures to enable these aspects of other people’s minds to be conscious just as those eminent computer scientists and neuroscientists cited above are speculating.
Mind uploading is here… now, as we do it all the time.
The implications are fascinating but I leave that to you for the time being, but I am sure I will come back to this another time when I have thought it through too.
For example, when I look out of my apartment here in Singapore I see (ethnically speaking) Chinese people praying to their deceased ancestors every day. Perhaps they are not only remembering those relatives but actually and literally, enabling the memories of those relatives to live again within their minds to a some degree.
